Using Grab, Bank OTPs & Food Delivery in Thailand: What Your eSIM Must Have

To use Grab, receive bank OTPs, and order food delivery in Thailand, your eSIM needs a real Thai (+66) number with SMS. Data-only eSIMs (Airalo, Saily, Drimsim) can't do any of this — you need Yesim's voice plan or a Thai carrier eSIM.

The Checklist

Grab driver callsVoice-capable number❌ No
Bank SMS OTPsSMS-receiving number❌ No
Food delivery (rider calls)Voice-capable Thai number❌ No
Hotel/tour confirmationsVoice or SMS❌ No
Maps, messaging, browsingData only✅ Yes

What Works

Yesim voice plan — real +66 number with SMS and calls from $1.68/day on AIS/DTAC. The simplest eSIM fix.

Thai carrier eSIM (thailandesim.com) — full AIS/True/dtac number from $8.90, the real deal. Note: True eSIMs install only inside Thailand, and outgoing calls/SMS need an in-store passport check.

The Backup Plan

Keep your home SIM active alongside the Thai eSIM (dual SIM). Use your home number for bank OTPs from your own country, and the Thai number (or a data eSIM like Airalo) for everything local. Most eSIM phones support this — it's the ideal tourist setup.

What Doesn't Work

  • aloSIM's "free number" → US number, Thai services reject it
  • Saily's number add-on → US number, same problem
  • Any data-only eSIM for driver calls or SMS OTPs — the number simply doesn't exist
